The Embassy participated in the celebration of Prensa Latina's 60th anniversary on Friday, June 14, 2019. The local news agency was founded by the Cuban President Fidel Castro, when the internationalist leader pointed out the necessity of establishing a news agency that could broadcast Latin American news, committed to honesty, truth and neutral attitudes. The late Che Guevara strongly supported the media project in Cuba.
The ceremony was a political-cultural event attended by a large number of media professionals from the Agency and the Cuban and international media; also, by Cuban political and cultural figures. The guest of honor was the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Mr. Victor Gaute, and the President of Prensa Latina, Mr. Luis Enrique González.
Mr. Gaute and Mr. Gonzalez delivered speeches on this occasion, expressing the Agency's role in spreading Latin American news to the world, as well as covering the world's news through its correspondents in all continents. The Agency and its staff also received awards from institutions such as the Federation of Cuban Journalists and the National Union of Culture. Among the recipients of the awards were journalist Julius Canales, who died a few weeks ago in a traffic accident in Havana. Mr. Canales has served as the Agency's Middle East correspondent for several years, where he was based in Beirut and Cairo.
